Reconsider Columbus Day

Some of us from the West Coast may be familiar with local counter-celebrations of Indigenous People’s Day/Native American Day in lieu of Columbus Day. But can we get a nationally recognized holiday up in here?

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take a day off where I can get it, but the original, root intent behind any federal holiday is to observe and honor. And considering the bloody legacy of Columbus, I’d rather celebrate/nurse my hangover towards something positive.

Re-naming/re-claiming Columbus Day is also an opportunity to build more awareness in the general public about the history and contemporary movement of First Nations peoples, along with an opportunity for the federal government to demonstrate it’s considerate enough to not basically shove a big FUCK YOU in the face of Native folks every year. So even if it’s the only thing you manage to accomplish on your day off, sign the petition, won’t you?
