Let this day celebrating Mexico’s victory in the Battle of Puebla (NOT Independence Day – thx NI!) and culture provide additional irony against the backdrop of the following slew of fucked up legislation and hateful rhetoric targeting Mexicans, Latinos, and other immigrant communities. So let us also celebrate by taking action against it!
- SB 1070, people.
Arizonans are calling for massive solidarity from the rest of the nation by demanding that the federal government not cooperate with SB 1070. Readers are encouraged to contact the White House in support of this demand. The Obama Administration can be reached by phone at 202-456-1111 or 202-456-1414, and by FAX at 202-456-2461. An email can be sent by visiting http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact. And Join the nation-wide fight for comprehensive immigration reform here.
You can also boycott AZ until SB 1070 is repealed. Don’t attend and don’t hold any conventions or conferences in the state of Arizona. Don’t take vacations in Arizona or support its tourist industry (unless its for an immigrant rights march!). Don’t patronize the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team — a major contributor to SB 1070 supporters. You can also boycott AZ-based businesses.
- Arizona, with the backing of Superintendent Tom Horne, bans ethnic studies programs in public schools and removes ESL teachers that have an accent. According to an adviser to Arizona educators: “Teachers should speak good grammar because kids pick up what they hear.”

- San Diego-area Congressman Republican Duncan Hunter said he would support deporting U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants at a Tea Party rally on Saturday, adding that “it takes more than walking across the border to be an American citizen.” Apparently, Hunter thinks it’s a good ideas to rescind the 14th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to all persons born in the United States. And just for shits and giggles, here’s a special Cinco de Mayo/Up Yours Arizona trailer for the Mexploitation film Machete, courtesy of Robert Rodriguez:
