BCB Profilin’: Derek Nguyen

Posted in BCB Profilin' with tags , , on February 7, 2011 by Cbruhs

This installment of Profilin’ features Derek Nguyen, New York-based filmmaker and man behind the recent short The Potential Wives of Norman Mao. Starring Ed Lin (Snakes Can’t Run) and Cindy Cheung (Children of Invention) and executive produced by George Takei (what WHAAAT). BCB wrote about the film a couple months ago, and now we’re following up with a Profilin’ of writer & director Derek. Enjoy!

Greetings, I am…

Derek Nguyen

I’ve been known to bitch about…

…everything! Having worked in non-profits serving artists and underprivileged communities (immigrants, youth, HIV, LGBT), I have a lot to bitch about. Although I tend to be a cheery person, I’m a pessimist at heart. Pretty much anytime I read the newspaper or watch the news (which is rare), I go into a tirade about the injustices of the world and how stupid people can be. I’ve been known to just bitch!

My influences are…

… Ang Lee, Jean Pierre Jeunet, Shakespeare, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Wong Kar Wai, Wes Anderson, Alice Walker, Harold Pinter, e.e. cummings, and Bruce Lee!

On a Saturday night you can find me….

…working! I’ve been a very busy guy lately. I’m working on a few film projects and my play, Monster is being produced off-Broadway in March at Pan Asian Repertory Theater. With rehearsals, writing, producing, directing, and finishing up my short film, The Potential Wives of Norman Mao, I tend to work weekends. And if I’m off, I’m cooking one of my grandma’s secret Vietnamese recipes or take a trip out of town. I love to travel!

On a Tuesday night you can find me…

… (unfortunately) working! I lead an exciting life, don’t I? There was a stretch of time when I had no work at all. So I value the work that I have and can get. I secretly love to work. I also work with an organization called APEX that mentors (primarily) Asian American youth in NYC to help them achieve their career, educational, and personal goals in life. I believe in nurturing future generations of achievers! So I might be there too.

My usual drink/poison is….

…Pinot Noir. Preferably from France.

If I was a superhero my name would be…

What do you mean, “if?”

One year, my partner and I threw a superhero-themed Halloween party. I had a silver wig that lit up, and  a mack-daddy suit complete with platform boots. It was quite fly I have to say.

I have a borderline unhealthy obsession with…

… food. I love to eat it, cook it, have people over for dinner, go out to eat, go to the farmer’s market, talk about food, read about food, watch food shows, and follow celebrity chefs (go David Chang!). Which is why, a few years ago, I had to lose 55 pounds!

Favorite thing to do in New York (or wherever you reside)….

… is going over the Manhattan or Brooklyn Bridge in a cab really late at night with the windows rolled down. Looking back at this great city, I remember how fucking awesome NYC is and why I made so many sacrifices to be here.

Free Association time! First word I think of after “Asian America”:

Strength!

My weapon of choice is….

…my pen!

My secret life is…..

… of an astronaut.

This edition of Profilin’ features Sheng Wang, stand-up comedian and lover of grubbin & cyclin. Along with a frequent touring schedule that takes him ’round the country, Sheng has a half-hour showcase premiering on Comedy Central THIS FRIDAY! Don’t miss it! Also, he has a restaurant in NYC Chinatown named after him. Kinda. Go there and order the special and tell ‘em Sheng sent ya.

Greetings, I am…

Sheng Wang. Comedian. Guy.

I’ve been known to bitch about…

Very little. But if I must…let it be about those with incredibly narrow minds when it comes to eating food.

My influences are…

America, Mitch Hedberg, Tom and Jerry, Rene Magritte, Mom, cheeseburgers.

On a Saturday night you can find me….

Telling jokes on stage.

On a Tuesday night you can find me…

That’s for me to know and for you to find out. Remember when people used to say that? What does that even mean? Why would it be for you to find out? I mean it sounds like it’s pretty private, right? Well, it’s not. I’d probably just be telling jokes like on Saturday…or writing, reading, or drinking with friends (I prefer going out on school nights).

My usual drink/poison is….

Good whiskey and hoppy beers.

If I was a superhero my name would be…

“Id” – as in the part of Freud’s psyche model that acts on the “pleasure principle.”

The last song/album I listened to is…..

Sit Down, Man – Das Racist.

I have a borderline unhealthy obsession with…

Food comas.

Favorite thing to do in New York….

Ride my bike.

Free Association time! First word I think of after “Asian America”:

AWESOME.

My weapon of choice is….

Burritos.

BCB Profilin & New Album: Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai

Posted in Awesomeness, BCB Profilin', For Your Consideration with tags , , , , on December 23, 2010 by Cbruhs

This edition of BCB Profilin’ spotlights Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai: Spoken word heavyweight, 24/7 worldwide grinder, and one of the most genuine, gracious, and relatable people I have ever met.

photo: Kevin Kane

Kelly just dropped her 2nd spoken word album Further She Wrote, produced by Black Cracker. I’ve seen Kelly perform many times, and still I was blown away at first listen by the album’s 11 powerful tracks — starting at track one, “Real Women I Know”.

Kelly’s poetry interwoven with Black Cracker’s electro-hop music & beats lends added depth and atmosphere, and Kelly’s voice is — as always –  resonant, uninhibited, and deft in its range of expression. Listen and download a “name your price” copy on her site (details below – the best deal in town!) and treat yourself to this holiday gift.

Greetings, I am …

Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai, spoken word artist based in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, New York by way of Chicago.

I’ve been known to bitch about…

Artists, inconsistency, and things that are put on top shelves beyond my physical reach.

My influences are…

Really varied. On a given day, I may be addicted to Prince, Me’Shell N’Degeocello, Kanye West, Sonia Sanchez, Fleetwood Mac, The Bangles, Aimee Mann, Baz Luhrmann movies, reading up on obscure moments in Asian Pacific Islander American history (i.e. the Chop Suey circuit, transcontinental railroad workers who actually built a house from ice in the Sierra Nevadas), John Leguizamo, Kat Williams, Octavia Butler, Thylias Moss, Spike Lee, Margaret Atwood, “Community,” “Top Chef All-Stars.” My mother is the middle daughter of a Shanghai politician who fled to Taipei. My father is the youngest son of a Tainan farmer. They came here to the U.S. in 1968 and 1969. I grew up as a teenager going to poetry slams in Chicago. I studied Urban Planning & Comparative Literature in college. I moved to Brooklyn about 6.5 years ago. I’ve done a lot of stuff with dancers/choreographers, multidisciplinary theater people, filmmakers, musicians.

photo: Katie Piper

On a Saturday night you can find me…

1) At a party in Brooklyn. 2) On the road/touring for a gig. 3) At home playing my guitar and trying to finish Anna Karenina.

On a Tuesday night you can find me…

1) At a party in Brooklyn. 2) On the road/touring for a gig. 3) At home playing my guitar and trying to finish Anna Karenina. (One of the perks of being a poet is that every night can be a weekend OR a weeknight.)

My usual drink/poison is…

Water, juice, or I tell people to surprise me. Red Stripe. Just had a Wells Banana Bread Beer in NYC, which is as delicious as it sounds, and a raspberry pepper martini (raspberri Absolut, grapefruit juice, club soda, a jalapeno, and fresh raspberry), when I was in Philly – which I am going to try to replicate at home. I decided to stop drinking alcohol for a year in 2009, which made people wonder if I was an alcoholic. But no, nothing quite so exciting/reckless, just took a year off from drinking, which made watching drunk people while sober very very illuminating.

If I was a superhero my name would be…
Worry Poet, The Diva. I tend to be very anxious for a poet, which I can’t figure out how I make the least stressful job in the world so damn stressful, but I’m about to transform that for 2011.

I have a borderline unhealthy obsession with…

Pastries. I’m one of these food porn people, not necessarily eating the food and definitely not cooking it. I just like to look at it. I like to stop and read menus on the street even if I’ll never go to the restaurant. I like to look at baked goods in their glass cases. Okay, it’s not that obsessive, but it is one of these things that I always do and seem to enjoy.

Favorite thing to do in New York…

I love chilling out in Union Square watching all the people walk by: the b-boys, the random musicians, the protesters, the kooky “free hugs” or “the world is going to end” people, the people waiting for each other for first dates, the skateboarders. The swirl of humanity that feels funky and free. It’s relaxing for me. Then I head over to Vanessa’s Dumplings on 14th Street for a veggie bun and a red bean bun.

Free Association time! First word I think of after “Asian America”:

Fractured. I feel really blessed to be able to travel the country and the world in general performing my poetry for folks, so I get to meet a lot of different people who I maybe wouldn’t have met otherwise. In some APIA communities, the biggest issue is gang violence. In other APIA communities, the biggest issue is being able to assert yourself from your parents and not being “white-washed.” In some APIA communities, the biggest issue is different APIA communities beefing with each other (not even to mention Black, White, Latino/a or Native communities). In yet other APIA communities, the biggest issue is access to education and health-care due to citizenship status and language barriers. In some APIA communities, the biggest issues are fighting for environmental justice and against gentrification in our ethnic neighborhoods. We got A LOT going on in our communities, and I think that geography, class, immigration history, language, and old political drama from back in the motherland keep a lot of us divided and in the dark about what is going on across the broader stretches of API America for everybody that’s not in our own community or clique.

photo: Katie Piper

My weapon of choice is…

The word. Seriously, my bf just asked me this week about when was the last time that I punched someone, and I don’t think I’ve ever punched someone, but I have cussed out people in the street more times than I can remember. I think it’s also extra-jarring for people, since I’m physically small plus of course, the low expectation that an Asian female won’t say anything back (booo!). People don’t expect it, so it’s usually enough for me to handle whatever I need handle at the moment. Of course, I use this weapon for good more often than for evil, and thank goodness for that, lol.

My secret life is…

As a mermaid surfer. I’ve been obsessed with surfing since I read Maxine Hong Kingston’s Hawai’i One Summer and went surfing in Hawai’i when I did my last gig there. Surfing is so peaceful, majestic, and dangerous all at the same time. It requires your entire body, mind, and spirit to focus, enjoy the wave, and be humble to it. You become this small but wonderful thing in nature as you ride. I’ve only been surfing 2 times, so I’m no expert or even aficionado by far, but I would love to do it more. Not too many chances to be out in mostly unpolluted waters in Brooklyn or the Midwest! I read somewhere that back in the day, sailors used to confuse manatees for mermaids, which I find hilarious and endears me to mermaids and manatees both. In Octavia Butler’s Wild Seed, she wrote a section where the lead protagonist just needs some time to cool out so she becomes a dolphin for 400 years. Sometimes, I feel like that, lol, like I might need to chill out as a dolphin for 400 years. But having said all of this, I can barely swim.

BCB Profilin’: Steven Ho

Posted in Awesomeness, BCB Profilin', HAWTNESS with tags , , , , , on December 13, 2010 by Cbruhs

This installment of BCB Profilin’ features Steven Ho: world-renowned martial artist, professional stuntman, Hollywood fight trainer, entrepreneur, and…ASIAN CONAN!!! This renaissance man contacted us to say wassup after we did a post on his new “Come Get It Now” music video with Petree — and we lost no time in squealing like 14-year-olds at an Elvis concert and then groveling shamelessly to interview him. And since Steven is as gracious as he is talented…he actually bought it!!

Greetings, I am…

Steven Ho

I’ve been known to bitch about…

Bitches.  I was taught as a child in martial arts class that if we got hit in sparring, it was our fault for not blocking it.  I gravitate towards people who are accountable and assume responsibility for their actions.  I can’t tolerate people over 25 who don’t.

My influences are…

Bruce Lee, Lao Tzu, Sun Tzu, Leonardo DaVinci, Muhammad Ali, Elvis Presley.

On a Saturday night you can find me….

Trolling the city streets for hoodlums.

On a Tuesday night you can find me…

Training at Westside Boxing Club.

My usual drink/poison is….

Fresh squeezed ginger, apple, celery juice.

Ho-Man.

I have a borderline unhealthy obsession with…

Trying to find organic ways to get our neighbor’s dog to stop pooping on our lawn.

Favorite thing to do in Los Angeles (or wherever you reside)…. Summer dinners and concerts at the Hollywood Bowl with friends, Lakers games, and beachside room at the Surf & Sand Hotel in Laguna Beach.

Married to…

Acclaimed interior and furniture designer, Nina Petronzio.

My weapon of choice is….

A pen……if that doesn’t work, Ninja Star.

My secret life…

I own PLUSH HOME, a high-end home building, interior design firm, and furniture manufacturing company with my wife.  Our flagship showroom is located on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood, California.

BCB Profilin’: Mondega

Posted in Awesomeness, BCB Profilin' with tags , , , , , , on October 28, 2010 by Cbruhs
Yesterday AzN reviewed Asian American rapper Mondega‘s latest LP For the People. Mondega was gracious enough to complete a BCB Profilin’ and give us a glimpse into his values system, what has shaped him, and why he’s one of the fastest rising rappers out there.

Greetings, I am…

Mondega for the people, also known as self proclaimed “Best Asian Rapper Alive”. I am a hip hop artist based in Raleigh, North Carolina with listeners/supporters throughout the U.S. and overseas.

I’ve been known to bitch about…

Vietnam’s oppressive government getting rich off stealing the Montagnards, in other words “Dan Thoc”, Indigenous and “minority” people’s ancestral lands for Bauxite and Coffee exports.

Our people have been stripped of our cultural identity, language, religion and rights as equal citizens of Vietnam. In other words we ARE the “niggas of Asia.” Is it because we’re brown skin? Are we less human? How can we Asian Americans complain about racism, when racism exists within our own culture?

Throughout our history, the Montagnard people have never been conquerors or people of war, but we’ve been enslaved, used and manipulated by many. Even before French and American occupation, our people have been raped, tortured and murdered by the Vietnamese people and government. It’s not just history. It’s happening today! In Vietnam, there is no such thing as a fair trial. If someone tell you that there is, either, they are one of those wannabe socialists without a realistic view on the human element or they are working for the government, period. Look at Cambodia for example, the Killing Fields is only half of the story. Here’s where I come in.

The communist, and militant regimes of Southeast Asia have been killing indigenous people and minorities for decades and no one gives a fuck about it! Look at Burma for example and the plight of the Karen peoples. Some people have been in refugee camps so long, they no longer speak their native tongue. Volunteering at a human rights organization, stacks and stacks of immigration paperwork’s lay, waiting for young, educated volunteers to help translate and fill them out, but where are we? too busy clubbing? Partying? Smoking, drinking and wasting our lives away?

I use hip hop as a tool to reach out to the youths, because we are the future. I don’t have the power to fight the entire government and change the world, but i will do whatever it takes to raise an army of young, intelligent minds to takeover the callings of today and tomorrow. I’m not saying that I’m perfect, but at least i acknowledge the issues and strive to do better, as a voice for change. Through hip hop, i can speak more bluntly. You’ll see what i mean on the next album.

I tell people “I Am The Best Asian Rapper Alive”, and because of that, the Asian Hip Hop community is not too fond of me. They’re listening. I know they are. They are anxious to hear what i have to say, but too proud to call me their own. I don’t know, i guess the things i rap about is not an easy pill to swallow, especially when we’re trying to be accepted by “the man”. I could careless. My dad once told me “what’s right is not always popular and what’s popular is not always right.” I’m going to let Bicoastal-Bitching be the witness, as i quote “I don’t give a fuck if i piss these wannabe rappers and so called superstars off, fuck feelings, i don’t give a fuck about you, you or you! Cause at this point and time, i do not care about your clubby beats, gimmick lines and rhymes about the streets, hoes, clothes and money. I’ve been in the streets, i sold drugs, i robbed lame fucks like ya’ll, but it’s time for a change, i fucked more women than you can imagine, but that’s  not what it’s about! I was in the hood today selling cds to real gangsters in the streets! Where ya’ll at? When i say “I do this for the people”, i mean it. It’s up to you to hate it or love it, but either way, i stood up for what i believed in.”

Because of colonialism, foreign influences,  and Vietnam’s greedy, ignorant and down right contradictive policies, innocent indigenous men, women and children live without food, clothing, shelter and suffer daily. They live without the freedom of religion, speech or assembly. In America, there are laws in place, such as “eminent domain”, where citizens are compensated if the state seizes their property, but in Vietnam’s case, they will take your land, burn down your homes, imprison your folks and you will not get anything in return. Not a penny, not a payment plan, not a job application, nothing! So what are we left to do? Blow up buildings and hope for a change? Brothers and sisters, i hear your cries, i’m doing the best i can. I’m just a young, ex-drug dealer trying to change my life… bare with me for a sec.

I think the most frustrating part of it all is that we, as Americans, allow this to happen. I mean, we ARE the main buyers of Vietnam’s exports. Where are you at Obama? But then again, it’s not really up to him. Its in the hands of “best interests”, right? During the Vietnam war, the Montagnard people stood alongside Americans on the frontlines, yet our fathers receive nothing but years of torture, imprisonment and receive no veteran benefits. Now that our people need America to step in and help us, no one listens. Like Pac said, i’m tired of knocking on the door beggin’ for food, i’m picking the locks and coming in blastin’!

I’m very concerned about our community. We are so caught up in this life that we forgot who we are and where we came from. At this rate, we will no longer have a language or culture  of our own. We’re too busy trying to be accepted by the white and black world we live in, in other words, we are voluntarily walking into our own self destruction. Our families brought us to America to live a better life and bring freedom back home, not to extort one another, die in the streets or fly back home in handcuffs. Wake up!

My influences are…

Nas, Common, 2pac, Snacky Chan, Bambu, Thai, Lac Su, Aung San Suu Kyi, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Elijah Muhammad and many, many more…

On a Saturday night you can find me….

Meeting different people and selling CDs.

On a Tuesday night you can find me…

Meeting different people and selling CDs.

My usual drink/poison is….

Heineken.

If I was a superhero my name would be…

“MYSELF”

The last song/album I listened to is…..

Snacky Chan – “I feel sorry for your mother”

I have a borderline unhealthy obsession with…

Newports and ganja

Favorite thing to do in L.A. and Raleigh, NC….

My favorite thing to do in LA is going to different parts of the city and trying different food from every hood. My favorite thing to do in Raleigh is kicking it the homies that i grew up with, drinking Heinekens with the O.G.’s, spending time with my girl, making music and basketball.

Free Association time! First word I think of after “Asian America”:

Divided

My weapon of choice is….

i don’t want to say it, so I’ll just say a microphone.

BCB Profilin’: DJ Boo

Posted in BCB Profilin' with tags , , , , , on July 12, 2010 by Cbruhs

I’m excited to introduce a new thang here at BCB: Profilin’! Every so often we’ll feature a different mover & shaker in the APIA community, and their goinzons that you should be clued into.

Our first Profilin’ is the indomitable DJ BOO, who I’ve had the pleasure of knowing for a few years now (first acquainted through Sulu Series). Take it away Booooooo!

1. Greetings, I am:

Boo, DJ Boo.

2. I’ve been known to bitch about:

Bad music. Extra medium clothes and the people who wear them.  Parking in NYC. Everyday stupidity that is running rampant in our everyday lives from politics to entertainment.  The dirty looks when I firmly stand that I am on team Jacob.  Bella needs to go with a leg humping canine.  Leg humping is a victimless crime unlike blood sucking.

3. My influences are:

Peyote and when that’s not available rubber cement heated to a low boil.
Honestly?  Bruce Lee, I want to be like water, but I really want to kick ass.  John Bonham, I want to play drums like him but not choke on my own vomit.  ODB, if only I can be that free.  My Father, I don’t know anyone who gives back as much as that man.

4. On a Saturday night you can find me:

Hustling on the streets selling my ass for the iPhone 4 (quite frankly any product put out by Apple).  Seriously?  It actually all depends.  Lately I’ve been gigging here and there.  Last week I was up at Martha’s Vineyard as the help at a wedding.  This weekend I will be the help on a farm in DC.  And the following week I’m at Southpaw in Brooklyn performing with Eternia.

5. On a Tuesday night you can find me:

In fetal possession wondering why she won’t love me.
This past Tuesday I was at Fat Beats performing alongside Eternia for her album release. Other than that Tuesdays are free for me.  Plus Tuesdays NCIS is on.  Did you know that NCIS is the number one cop show, ever?

6. My usual drink/poison is:

A glass of chocolate milk.  Actually that’s a lie.  I’m lactose intolerant and I become a bio-hazard if I consume a tablespoon of that cow juice.  It used to be rum and coke or a Red Stripe but I really don’t drink anymore.  Now its just good old H2O with a teaspoon of crude to help it go down smoothly.

7. The last song/album I listened to is:

I’m constantly listening to music.  One of the artists I work with, Eternia, just dropped an album, “At Last”.  Really great album from one of the best female Hip-hop MC’s out right now.  The album has a little bit of everything from the bragging and boasting to the close and personal.  I think good albums are like windows into the artists lives that allow you to see what they are about.  Her album does just that.

I also just bought Omar Offendum’s “SyrianamericanA”.  Really great Arab-American Hip-hop artist.  I performed with him back in April at Harvard.  There was a real academic approach to his performance that both entertained and enlightened, touching base on his experience as an Arab born American raised person.  He also has no hesitation incorporating his culture into his art form referencing Arab poets and folklore even rhyming in Arabic on some of his tracks.

Before that I was listening heavily to Narcy’s “The Narcicyst”.  Another Arab Hip-hop artist hailing from Montreal.

8. If I was a superhero my name would be:

The Brown Streak.  My power would be the ability to quell any tense situation with ridiculousness.  It would mostly involve flatulence.  I really think flatulence can change the world even bring about peace.  If I was president there wouldn’t be a big red button you push to end it all it would be a big red finger you pull.

9. I have a borderline unhealthy obsession with:

Read the answer above.  Sometimes I use that as an ice breaker.  But I’m learning and growing using my mouth instead of my ass to make friends.  To be honest it’s junk food mostly chocolate, I’ll double fist bowls of the stuff if given the opportunity.  I’ve cut down considerably and actually changed (or at least trying to change) what I eat.

Really good book to pick up is Michael Pollan’s “Food Rules”.  Not a diet book but a collection of rules of thumb regarding food.  One rule that’s stuck in my head “If you’re not hungry enough to eat an apple then you’re not really hungry.”

10. Favorite thing to do in New York:

People watch.  Especially when its with someone because nothing says family fun like ridiculing and demeaning complete strangers.  New York is great for it because its such a melting pot of races and sizes.

11. Free Association time! First word I think of after “Asian America”:

Wesley Snipes.  The greatest Asian American actor of our time.

12. My weapon of choice is:

Hammer.  You can build and destroy with it.  If one isn’t available, my chompers.  I would not hesitate to go Hannibal Lecter on someone and bite them in the face.  I should wear a plaque around my neck warning people to keep all appendages away from my mouth.

13. Be sure to check out my:

Underwear it’s full of surprises.

Seriously check out http://www.SoundCloud.com/Booda-X. I’ve got mixes uploaded there for all to listen.  Also check out some of my friends The Juggaknots (http://www.MySpace.com/JuggsMusic), Eternia (http://www.MySpace.com/Eternia), and Nomadic Wax (http://www.NomadicWax.com).  One more thing: I am at ROOM 18 (18 Spring Street between Mott & Elizabeth Streets) Thursday nights 9 pm til close.
