Pop-Up Retail in Oakland

You can listen all you want to the NY Times and their travel rankings (Oakland at #5), the Town is big and there can’t be a Michelin Star restaurant in every neighborhood. There are a lot of holes in Oakland and one of the biggest ones that residents and outsiders constantly mention is a lack of retail opportunities. Whether you’re Christmas shopping or trying to buy basic necessities, its a whole lot easier to hop in a car and drive to the Oakland/Emeryville border and shop at Target, which ain’t going to fill the Town’s coffers with that tax/money dollars. Which is why this PopUpHood idea is ingenious. The basic is giving business owners a 6-month amnesty on rent but the upside is filling up those empty storefronts with viable businesses. One of the first is Manifesto Bicycles, one of my favorite bike shops ever. Its main location is near MacArthur BART, but that’s way too far to go to regularly. Which is why the new location in Historic Downtown Oakland is B-O-M-B. Take a look at this video for more info on how they put this together.

What is it with Swedes and fetishizing Asians? First it was Lizbeth’s girlfriend in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and now its Real Human, the Swedish knockoff of NBC’s Beautiful People. We get it, she’s a robot that’ll be great raising kids AND great in bed for pops. BEST lines from the trailer:

Dad: Relax, it can shop, do dishes!
Moms: Its a sex toy!!

(later that night)

Dad: Its past your bedtime, Tobbe.

Classic Swedish cinema. Did I tell you how my friends just came back from Stockholm and were physically accosted everywhere they went for being Asian? YAY SWEDEN!

Ali Wong on Are You There, Chelsea?

In case you missed it, funny-as-hell stand-up comedian and one of BCB’s fave people was on the TeeVee last night: Ali Wong!

Yesterday at the gym, while shambling half-assedly on the treadmill trying to ignore the smell of man farts to my left, I let out a HOLLA when I caught Ali’s lovely mug — as Chelsea’s best friend “Olivia” — on the pilot episode of Are You There, Chelsea?

I’m a fan of both foul-mouthed babes, so it makes me all a-flutter to see Ali and Chelsea together, At Last! And she gets some serious screen time, so a big congrats to Ali.

Lady Chinky Eyes On Colbert Report

By now, you’ve probably heard about last week’s incident where a New York Papa John’s employee identified a Korean American customer as “lady chinky eyes” on her receipt.

Not only has this received attention on assorted Gawker Media and Asian American blogs, but it’s risen to national prominence by appearing on the Colbert Report last night:

Yes Colbert! Hopefully this will help reinforce the message that this recent trend (also see Chik-fil-A’s “ching” & “chong” receipts…plus Chik-fil-A gets extra bogus points because they’ve donated millions to anti-gay groups) is all sorts of fucked up. And if you’re one of those people that thinks we live in a post-racial, colorblind Kumbaya society, you need look no further than your local fast food joint for evidence that this shit permeates.
