Now YOU Can (virtually) Bust a Cap in a Triad Gangsta’s Ass (online)
Granted, I’m guilty of playing Grand Theft Auto. A lot. Back in the day, of course. GTA 2, online, shooting up mofo’s in mah dorm room at 4 am. Then came GTA 4 and it got super realistic way too fast. You had storylines, and blood, and 3D graphics. And along came the racist caricatures of Eastern Euro, Jamaican, LA Compton, and the occasional Chinese gangsta. And I still played. I haven’t played in a while, cause I’m getting old, and my attention span is practically zero and I get headaches from 3D environments… But this new GTA is worth taking a look at:
Say waaaaatt!?! GTA: Chinatown? There was a C-Town in Liberty City? Its a video game about glamorizing Triad violence in a fictional C-town? There’s hot aZn girls in Chinese dresses, machine gun toting Fukienese dragons, swords and avenging the death of a father? And BEIJING OPERA too?!
This game looks highly offensive, but makes me sooo damn curious to play it all the way through just to see how “bad” it is. I especially like the “gangsta” rap stylin of the pseudo Mountain Brothers rapper in the trailer. At least, I HOPE its a wanna be Mountain Brothers and not Chops and Co. themselves tryin to earn a dolla and 15 cents… Oh, and did I mention that the Nintendo DS has historically been marketed towards kiddies!? With exclusive pokemon DS’s and Nintendog DS’s and Mario Kart DS’s… So what does this mean to the Big N’s image?!
Chinese dress, slanted eyed cell-shaded animation, AND a glock?! Can this appeal to the horny Middle American teen any MORE than THIS?!

Interesting…I wonder if it will resemble San Andreas’ black gangster motif.
Nintendo is releasing this on one of their platforms? Wow, never thought I would see that. I always wondered when they would make an Asia-centric GTA, and they now they have and it’s going to be on DS. Whee.

I try not to take anything in a GTA game seriously – I play and enjoy the hell out of GTA IV, but then again, I’m not a Russian / Serb / Albanian, and it seems like they get it the worst in the game. Then again, the main character, Niko, is very human, and talks about how being in the war “ruined him”.

Well Justin Wu I think the point of niko being russian/serb/albanian is to show how many immigrants get into crime just to get by
